Thunderstorm and Noise Phobias
Thunderstorm and noise phobias can make your pet very anxious and sometimes even do dangerous things. More than one of my patients have jumped through windows because they are trying to get away from the scary noise. Others will hide and shake. Some destroy things. All of these reactions represent a significant negative effect on the pet's quality of life.
Some noises are predictable, like fireworks for July 4 and New Year's Eve. For these situations, giving the pet some anti-anxiety medication in advance and a safe place may be all that is needed.
Other noises, like thunderstorms, are unpredictable. Getting a medication into a pet prior to a storm is almost impossible because of the unpredictability. For these pets, a daily anti-anxiety medication may be needed.
In some cases, desensitization and counterconditioning may be appropriate and helpful. We can guide you on how to do this.
